“It’s all going to be okay.” Here’s the current consensus thinking: “The economy will have a ‘growth pause’ and be neither too hot (inflationary) nor too cold (recessionary).” It is the so called ‘Goldilocks’ scenario. Now, as investors, we are normally paid to be cynical and we usually disagree with the consensus. However, this time we don’t. We think that while the US economy will slow due to a retrenching consumer and a housing slowdown, we believe there is ample room for rate cuts in front of any excessive weakness. We also believe that economic growth ex-US will support global economic activity. In sum, a moderate slowdown is what is in store.
