In a tumultuous period, which culminated in the proposal by the US government of a $700 billion fund to buy troubled assets from financial institutions, we saw the mortgage providers Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac taken into public ownership, the investment bank Lehman file for bankruptcy and the US government bail out the insurance company AIG. In the meantime, the US Federal Reserve and central banks around the world have pumped funds into the markets to improve liquidity. |
