Our internal rating shows you the impact your investments have on society and the environment – “people and planet”. By “impact” we mean the potential benefits that your investments create, such as access to clean water, as well as the potential harm caused, such as carbon emissions.
The rating allows you to compare the impact of your fund relative to its benchmark and is on a scale of one to five – with five the most positive impact.
If the fund does not have a target benchmark, the comparator benchmark will be used. If a fund has more than one comparator benchmark, the first one named in the Key Investor Information Document (KIID) will be used.
As part of the management of the fund, the manager invests in a portfolio of underlying companies. The activities of these companies result in harms and benefits to society that are often not captured in their financial valuation.
We look across 36 environmental and social factors, including impacts like connectivity and medicine provisions which generate really positive scores, while some of the biggest costs to society are carbon emissions and tobacco use. We quantify those harms and benefits for the businesses we invest in. We’ve developed our own tool to do this, called SustainEx*.
SustainEx reveals the harms and benefits to society that companies create per $100 of revenue they generate. It expresses the result as a percentage. For example, a SustainEx score of +2% means that company is having a positive environmental and social impact of $2 for every $100 of revenue.
We perform the calculation across all the companies within the fund to arrive at the total portfolio score.
* SustainEx is based on Schroders’ methodology. It relies on 36 attributes to quantify the positive and negative externalities of companies in financial terms. It is a combination of academic analysis and company data that has reviewed more than 500 pieces of academic research, analyses 70+ data points for every company and covers more than 10,000 global companies. If a data point is not disclosed by a company, we use the sector average and apply a penalty for non disclosure. The latest available holdings data within SustainEx varies, depending on the underlying holdings reporting date.
