Careers: Miki shares her journey from Office Administrator to Trader

I joined Schroders in 2011 as Office Administrator when there were just three people in the Shanghai office - two Equity Analysts and the Office Administrator (today there are over 60!)

When I was offered the position, I had to make a decision between returning to Australia or working for Schroders Shanghai. The collaborative and friendly environment at the interview made it easy for me to see that Schroders was a business I’d enjoy working for.

I made the career move to Trader after working as an Office Administrator for eight years. My manager at the time encouraged me to take the AMAC exam (Asset Management Association of China) to expand my professional knowledge.

When the Trader role came up, at first I didn’t think I’d have the confidence to make the shift from administration to trading, but with their support I realised I had many transferable skills. I’d also started a family so I was thinking about my future and ways I could continue to develop. I listened to everyone’s advice and decided to go for the role.

My biggest challenge at Schroders was in 2019, while I was still an Administrator. We were moving buildings and my colleague and I were responsible for overseeing and organising the construction work. There were a lot of deadlines to meet and stakeholders involved.

We were going to weekly site meetings and dealing with third-parties and suppliers. We worked together, learnt a lot and managed to get everything done, but it was quite a challenge! After managing such a large project, it gave me confidence to transfer to the trading desk.

When I started out as a Trader it was a brand new team of two – me and someone with years of experience. We went to Singapore for two weeks of intensive training which was a brilliant opportunity.

This gave me an idea of the trading mode, structure and functionality of our Singapore trading hub. They also shared their extensive knowledge of domestic government regulation, local policy, trading systems and more.

As a relatively new team for the Shanghai office, we’re continuing to learn and make adjustments. I’m always grateful for the continued support and invaluable guidance from my colleagues.

The people I have worked alongside have not only been wonderful but are the highlight of my career - for more than a decade we have witnessed each other’s respective growth, change and improvement.
