International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT)

At Schroders we pride ourselves on fostering  an inclusive culture where everyone can bring their whole self to work and realise their potential. As part of this, we have established a number of employee resource groups , which are led by our people and focus on driving inclusion across our business.

SchOUT is our community of LGBT+ colleagues and straight allies, who are committed to building professional and support networks in the business.  Its aim is to help recruit, develop and retain talent from the LGBT+ community.

In celebration of the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT), senior SchOUT sponsor, Garth Taljard, Global Head of Investment Product and Multi-Asset Management, had an incredibly open and emotional conversation with Zoë Chowney.

Zoë is the first openly transgender woman co-chair of the gay women’s network in LondonShe is a tech entrepreneur and a powerful advocate for LGBT+ issuesShe is also a founder and co-chair of Pride in Business and frequent public speaker and writer for publications such as the Gay Times.

Nothing was off limits for Zoë, who shared her courageous individual story and insights into the broader trans community

I don’t care how personal, or how emotional the questions are, because I want people to understand what it means to be transgender, Zoë said

Together, Zoë and Garth highlighted the importance of increasing awareness of the issues faced by the trans community; there is a strong link between trans issues and mental health, with 48% of trans people having attempted suicide.

Zoë spoke about why she would “want to choose to move from one of the most privileged demographics in the world as a straight white male, to probably the most marginalised and least privileged in the world: a trans woman. She explained that there was always this constant compulsion to express your real self”.

Zoë’s final words of advice were that “it all comes back to just treating trans people the same as any other person”.
