Six people lift the lid on early careers at Schroders

Each year, we welcome new talent into our business through our early careers programme, designed to give new joiners the expertise, experience and exposure to build a long-term career in our industry. They bring us the unique perspectives and creativity that we value so highly.

Hear from six of our recent trainees, apprentices and graduates on what life is like working here at Schroders, and how it’s transformed their futures.

Group-1.jpg12 trainees and 17 apprentices joined us in August.

Life as a trainee

A year-long programme run in partnership with Investment20/20 for school leavers and graduates, our traineeship delivers invaluable training and practical experience. There are opportunities and support to gain formal qualifications and chances to build lasting professional relationships.

For Kelvin, a 2019 trainee who is now permanently based in Global Marketing, the scheme acted as a springboard for his professional career:

"Growing up in the care system inhibited my exposure to role models and people to look to for advice about career choices. Joining Schroders turned this around. I came into the industry looking for an opportunity; now I aspire to advance here at Schroders."

For Cartell this was an opportunity to grow his commercial skills on his gap year "it enabled me to enhance my commercial awareness and fine-tune my analytical skills, which equipped me well to start reading Law at Oxford the following year."

Life as an apprentice

Our full accredited apprenticeship opportunities offer a two year entry-level role at Schroders for school leavers. These convert to a full-time role after the initial two years of formal training designed to build expertise and personal capabilities.

Jake, a current Service Desk apprentice based in Horsham shares:

"I felt I was in a position to get hands-on experience and make a significant impact within a business.

Not only did the practical aspect draw my attention, I was also attracted to getting my foot in the door and collaborating with different teams in the business."

Life as an intern

Created for penultimate year university students, the eight-week summer internship offers insight into how the business works, along with practical experience.

After spending the summer of 2021 with Schroders, Hattie reflected on the confidence she gained from the programme. She explained:

"The internship has given me a newfound confidence in my ability to succeed in anything I choose to do... Hearing about Schroders’ employees career paths was hugely encouraging; if anything, the internship made me excited about what the future holds."

Hattie has just been accepted on a graduate role for 2022.

Rahul, a current summer intern, was most taken back at the inclusive and supportive environment at Schroders saying it "definitely breaks the mould of a stereotypical finance firm" and that "the culture is as amazing as it is made out to be."

Life as a graduate

602511_Graduate-Headshot_Montage_2021.jpg39 global Graduates joined us in September.

For those leaving university, this offers a solid start to their career. Focused on building the skills, relationships and experience vital to a successful working life, the scheme offers a firm foundation and a first step on the career ladder.

James, one of the first US graduates on the global graduate scheme, reflect how this experience matured his understanding of asset management:

"This has allowed me to garner the expertise and exposure necessary to launch a successful and purpose-driven career in the asset management industry, uncovering my true passion and strengths. I’ve learned so much about the industry and Schroders."
