Why are renewables so important in the US?
US Renewables is forecast to increase ~200% over the next decade. This will require significant pools of capital. We believe favorable federal tax incentives, combined with strong resources in terms of wind volumes and solar irradiation, complete a significant opportunity for investment. Furthermore, the passing of the Inflation Reduction Act is driving a further buildout of renewable energy infrastructure, representing an attractive opportunity for investors to participate in the growth of this asset class.
Why wind power?
Wind is crucial to the energy transition in the US. The US has vast wind resources, particularly in the Midwest and Great Plains regions, making these regions ideal for harnessing consistent power. Over the years, the cost of wind power has significantly decreased, making it increasingly competitive with other sources of electricity generation. Advances in technology, economies of scale, and supportive policies have contributed to the declining costs of wind energy. As a result, wind power has become an attractive option for utilities and consumers seeking affordable and sustainable electricity.
Recent geopolitical tensions have accelerated the need for countries to reduce their dependence on traditional energy sources such as fossil fuels; in turn, this has strengthened appetites for action on the energy transition. By harnessing wind resources domestically, the United States can reduce its dependence on imported fossil fuels, and wind farms are capable of producing power all year round, 24 hours a day. This enhances energy security and reduces vulnerability to price fluctuations and supply disruptions.
What is Bright Stalk Wind Farm?
Schroders Greencoat currently manages two wind portfolios in the United States, covering six wind farms in Texas and in Illinois, with an aggregate capacity of 532 MW. One of those wind farms is Bright Stalk Wind Farm in Chenoa, IL, co-invested with EDP Renewables. In operation since December 2019, the farm has 57 V136 turbines capable of 205 MW of electricity. Bright Stalk is capable of powering ~70,000 homes, operating 24 hours a day.
