Making An Impact: Lucas
Meet Lucas, Athlete-Activist
Find out how SportsSG athete, Lucas, is contributing to a more sustainable future.
Hi Lucas, tell us a little about yourself.
I am one of the pioneer batch of speed skaters in Singapore. I got into skating from a very young age, thanks to my parents for making it a family activity! Because of that, I am very passionate about exposing kids to skating, and nurturing the next generation.
How do you carry sustainability through your everyday life?
All kids need opportunities to learn, and they should be given the freedom to explore. I regularly work with organisations such as Engineering Good, to distribute devices for students from low-income families to provide equal access to education. I also spend my time coaching kids, using sports as a platform to help them explore their interests and grow.
What does being an athlete-activist mean to you?
As athletes, we are role models in our sport and an inspiration to others who follow our sport. Our determination to push limits and achieve our goals, whether it is sports or social causes, can inspire people to do more and go after our heart’s desires.
What is the one action we can all do to live a more sustainable lifestyle?
It starts from recognising that kids need inclusive and fair education. The action can be as small as donating our resources, and spending a few hours a week to mentor or help those in need, who otherwise may not have learning opportunities.
