Top theme: The Chinese economy and the reminbi currency

China is well on the way to becoming the largest economy in the world, which means it is playing an increasingly important role in the international community. This particularly applies to the Chinese currency the renminbin (RMB), which to date has been relatively insignificant for international trade and investment decisions because the exchange rate is closely tied to the dollar. China is now looking at reforms to liberalise its currency. Actions such as loosening exchange controls and reducing the dependency on the dollar will probably give the renminbi much more international importance.

    Top theme: Asian Equity investing

Today, it is thought that Asia will account for around 50% of the total global GDP by 2030, an incredible fact in view of the way in which the economic power of Asia, and China in particular, has changed over the years. But investing in Asia doesn't automatically have to mean only investing in China, but rather in a whole continent full of opportunities.

Top theme: Frontier Markets - BRIC's successors still worthy of attention even as final whistle blows for emerging markets

Sports fans from all over the world were looking at a frontier market this summer. The term applies to Ukraine, which was joint host with Poland to this year's European football championship. Not many people know that, though. The new European champions are now known, and with calm returning to Ukraine no-one is paying much attention to this European frontier market. But the Euro 2012 final hosts are a perfect example of what a frontier market is. The coverage of the event showed the opportunities and the risks of these markets.

Top theme: Too much risk is no fun

'No risk, no fun' or 'Who dares wins?' both statements are true. It is widely known that investors need to diversify in order to minimise risk and, ultimately, generate a positive return. However, only a select few are aware that investors should go a step further than just allocating their portfolios to different asset classes and pay attention to risk allocation as well. Schroders multi-asset team takes full account of risk when constructing its portfolios.

Top theme: A harness for hedge funds

Unregulated hedge funds are some of the most versatile investments around, but they are also potentially risky. The Schroder GAIA fund platform whips unregulated hedge funds into order like a harness tames wild horses and ensures transparency and liquidity. It offers investors a selection of first-class hedge fund strategies that are compliant with the EU's UCITS IV investment directive and are monitored constantly by Schroders.
