Flexibility

Active ETFs offer real-time pricing and daily holding transparency, enabling investors to stay informed about their investments while enjoying the liquidity associated with traditional ETFs.

Beyond the track record: refining active ETFs due diligence

Active ETFs demand more than track record checks: assess alpha source, ETF fit, governance, implementation, portfolio role.

Active ETFs: A growing investment choice

Active ETFs can help meet evolving investor needs by offering strategies that aim to outperform benchmarks, while benefiting from the transparency and accessibility of the ETF structure.

Given this hybrid benefit, active exchange traded funds have emerged as a growing investment choice in the European market. Having nearly tripled in size over the past two years, active ETF assets reached €78.4 billion by end of 2025, attracting €22.7 billion in net inflows3. This momentum looks set to continue, with 94% saying they see a role for active ETFs in portfolios (and only 6% saying the opposite), the debate is now shifting from whether to use them to how to use them effectively4.

Active ETFs explained

  • Active exchange-traded funds (ETFs) are investment funds traded on the stock exchange, like regular shares. Unlike passive ETFs, which aim to replicate the performance of an index, active ETFs involve a professional manager making decisions about how to allocate assets within the fund, based on research, forecasts, and their expertise. This active management aims to outperform the market or achieve specific investment objectives. Active ETFs offer transparency and liquidity, as they can be bought and sold at market price whenever the exchange is open.

  • Active ETFs are run by professional investment managers who actively manage the fund’s portfolio. These managers use research, analysis and market insights to identify investment opportunities and construct portfolios aligned with the fund's objective.

Investors can buy and sell active ETFs on the stock exchange throughout the trading day. Trading is supported by market makers, who help provide liquidity and efficient pricing based on the value of the underlying assets and market demand.

  • Active ETFs are not a separate asset class. Rather, they are a way of accessing an investment strategy through the convenience of an ETF structure. Their role in a portfolio will depend on the outcome an investor is seeking to achieve.

Investors may use active ETFs to:

    • Enhance diversification by adding exposure to different investment styles, sectors or sources of return.
    • Express a tactical investment view without changing a broader strategic asset allocation.
    • Help manage portfolio risks through active security selection and portfolio positioning.
    • Maintain market exposure while making portfolio changes, such as manager transitions or rebalancing exercises.

    For example, an investor might:

    • Use a broad market ETF as a core holding and complement it with an active ETF focused on income generation.
    • Add an active fixed income ETF to help manage interest rate or credit risks within a portfolio.
    • Use an active ETF as a satellite allocation to gain access to a specialist investment strategy.

The way an active ETF is used will depend on the investor's objectives and overall portfolio construction approach.
