As I reflect on the findings of our 2024 Global Investor Insights Survey, it is clear that the insurance sector is facing a significant period of change when it comes to investment strategy and implementation.
Our survey tells us that 95% of insurance companies are now either invested, or planning to invest in private markets within the next two years. This reflects our own experience with both clients and prospects. Furthermore, the expected increase in private market allocations seen in the survey, to single asset classes and bespoke solutions, are echoing discussions we’re having today on what the most appropriate model might be for an insurance company to build a private markets allocation.
The insurance report is available here.
Our survey also provides evidence of a shift in allocations when it comes to public equity allocations, with respondents indicating that more than half plan to increase their exposures to global equities. This trend is common across all of the insurance company types surveyed – Life, P&C, Composite, and Reinsurance.
This reinforces a narrative I am hearing, where there is a growing consensus that the dominance of US equities can be accessed more effectively by investing in a global equity solution, and in turn reduce the need for Investment Committees to actively manage changes in regional and country allocations, thereby presenting opportunities for improvements in efficiency of governance.
In fixed income, we are seeing both private credit and investment grade corporate debt dominating planned future flows over the next 1-2 years, with the exception of Asia Pacific, where Emerging Market Debt ranked highest.
Finally, we know that insurance companies often pave the way amongst institutional investors when it comes to innovation. We see positive sentiment towards AI, both in their own organisation, and expectations of its use by asset managers.
I hope you enjoy reading this year’s survey. Read the full report here.
