Armed forces programme
Our armed forces programme allows talented service leavers to gain commercial experience to complement their existing skills. This then enables them to build long term careers at Schroders.
Individuals are selected to join one of a number of business areas, based on their unique skillset and experience. All members of the programme are given training and development opportunities alongside their interesting and varied day-to-day roles.
Roles and opportunities
The programme runs six month paid internships from May to November each year. The roles change each year, but you could work in one of a variety of areas including: Wealth Management, Project and Change Management, Distribution Operations, Corporate Services or Technology.
Currently all roles are in the UK, in our London offices.
Who we’re looking for
To be eligible for this programme applicants must have completed a minimum of one year of regular service in the armed forces. We recognise and value the typical qualities of former service personnel; we are looking for bright individuals with an evidenced background of high achievement. Individuals are expected to be educated to degree level as well as demonstrating leadership, teamwork and problem solving skills, and an interest in the asset management industry.
What we offer
Participants will have the opportunity to start a new career within a supportive, dynamic environment. These roles have the potential to transfer into permanent jobs for individuals who show high potential and excel over the course of the internship. Individuals will have mentorship from their line manager and access to a wide network of fellow former Armed Forces members to help them integrate into the business and make the transition as successful as possible.

Marshall Elliott: Operational Excellence Practitioner, Global Change
Marshall joined Schroders on our 2017 scheme, after spending over 10 years in the British Army. Having completed a number of operational tours and a variety of roles within the military, he left as a senior Captain. He was used to dealing with complex operations, managing teams and solving problems. Starting his time in Investment Operations, he found a permanent role within Global Change at the end of his six month internship. He is now part of a team which drives operational excellence across the company, helping business heads create efficiencies through better working practices and improved processes.
Marshall said: “Schroders' armed forces internship is an ideal way to transition from the army into a second career. It is great that the company is recognising the skills that we can bring from our time in the military and convert those to valuable commercial roles. It has been quite a learning curve since joining the company but I have been well supported by my management and wider ex-forces network of colleagues.
“I’m very glad to have found a permanent position within the company and look forward to continuing to develop my knowledge going forward. The team I have found myself in is very project focussed, lending itself well to my previous experience of running projects and dealing with change within the army; it feels like a very natural fit for me."
Stuart Ellis: Assistant Portfolio Manager, Cazenove Capital
Stuart completed his six years in the British Army as a Captain in the Infantry and joined Cazenove Capital in April 2017 as part of the armed forces scheme. The skills and attributes honed whilst leading soldiers in Afghanistan and at home have allowed him to seamlessly transition into the civilian workforce. Sitting in the Discretionary Wealth Management team he deals directly with clients’ investment needs in a front-of-house role.
Stuart said: “Cazenove Capital has focussed on utilising the transferable skills acquired during my time in the army. By allowing time for professional development I have been able to quickly re-role and push forward with my new career. The scheme gave me a chance to demonstrate my ability, but also understand the culture of the company.”
We’re aiming for next year’s programme to start in May 2019 with applications opening in February 2019.
