With waste production set to grow substantially in coming years, owing largely to population growth and rising urbanisation rates, technology to treat and manage waste is becoming increasingly important.
In this paper, we look at the five ws of waste (who, what, why, where and when):
- Who is creating the waste?
- What is waste composed of and what are the growth drivers?
- Why is waste such an important issue?
- Where does our waste end up?
- When will regulation incentivise the sector?
We then take a deep dive into current and emerging technologies and waste management methodologies, focusing on the advantages and disadvantages of:
- Artificial intelligence (AI) and automated sorting
- Waste-to-energy technologies
- Landfill methane capture
